What were you most afraid of as a child?
For many of us, there was always that one “personal monster” that kept us awake at night. Maybe it was something hiding in the closet, or a shadow that seemed to follow you down a dark alley.
These fears weren’t real, yet they lingered in our minds, quietly building a strange sense of terror. And in the stillness of the night, those imagined fears often felt even bigger.
Today’s song takes those very memories and reinterprets them through a bright and refreshing tropical sound. It’s “Dinosaur” by AKMU, a track that transforms childhood fear into something surprisingly uplifting.
The song is inspired by a real childhood episode from Lee Chanhyuk of AKMU.
It happened in a semi-basement home in Singok-dong, Uijeongbu, where a family of four was peacefully asleep one early morning. Suddenly, young Chanhyuk woke up screaming. In his dream, a gigantic dinosaur had smashed through the window and was roaring at his family.
Because of lyrics referencing things like “a hole dug by a rat” and the semi-basement setting, many listeners speculated that the dinosaur symbolized poverty or debt collectors. However, Chanhyuk clarified it simply:
“No, it was just a really scary dinosaur dream.”
From an adult’s perspective, it may seem like just a dream—but to a child, that fear can feel overwhelming and very real. “Dinosaur” takes that pure, innocent fear and transforms it into a sophisticated tropical house track, released in the summer of 2017.
Artist: AKMU
Line-up: Lee Chanhyuk & Lee Suhyun (sibling duo)
Identity: Brilliant musicians known for turning everyday perspectives into unique lyrics and melodies
Career Highlight: Debuted after winning K-pop Star Season 2 in 2012, consistently topping charts with every release
“I still remember it clearly
The dinosaur that made even fearless young me / Jump in fear”
This line playfully captures the idea that even the bravest child once had something that terrified them.
“You broke through our window / And roared at my family
If I meet you again / I’ll scream louder than you”
This part feels both relatable and touching. It suggests that, as we grow up, we gain the courage to face the fears that once overwhelmed us. At the same time, it can also feel like a reflection on how much we’ve changed from our innocent childhood selves.
The song begins with a warm acoustic guitar, making you wonder, “Is this the usual AKMU style?”—and then suddenly, a refreshing pluck synth sound bursts in.
It was AKMU’s first attempt at EDM, specifically tropical house, yet it blends seamlessly with their signature style.
One of the highlights is Suhyun’s soaring vocal in the chorus, reaching up to a high A5. Her clear, refreshing tone combined with powerful high notes elevates the entire atmosphere of the song.
“Dinosaur” marked a major turning point in AKMU’s musical journey. From this track onward, they began incorporating band sounds more actively, and their lyrics became deeper and more abstract.
For fans, the song also felt like a special gift before Chanhyuk’s military enlistment. Although it didn’t receive massive promotion at the time due to his enlistment, the song gradually gained recognition and is now considered one of AKMU’s signature tracks.
Personally, this is one of my favorite AKMU songs.
It perfectly blends their signature innocence and wit with an EDM-based tropical sound, creating something truly unique. It’s a rare kind of track—one that feels both familiar and completely new at the same time.
