Noel’s “Propose” (청혼) was released in May 2004 as part of their second full-length album Even If It Hurts (아파도 아파도). Debuting in 2002 under the unique title of “Korea’s first mobile singers,” Noel is a four-member vocal group consisting of Kang Kyun-sung, Jeon Woo-sung, Lee Sang-gon, and Na Sung-ho. Their group name, Noel, symbolizes different voices blending together like the colors of a sunset to create one beautiful harmony.
At the time of its release, “Propose” was not even the album’s title track. It quietly followed as a secondary promotional song and seemed destined to fade away unnoticed. But as years passed, its heartfelt lyrics and emotional harmonies slowly captured people’s hearts. Through word of mouth, the song experienced one of the most memorable reverse-charting stories in K-pop ballad history and eventually became known as Korea’s “national wedding song.”

One of the most dramatic things about “Propose” is its incredible comeback story.
The song was released as a follow-up track from Noel’s 2004 album Even If It Hurts. The lyrics were written by Bang Si-hyuk and Park Chae-won, while Kwon Tae-eun composed the music. Since it wasn’t the title track and the album itself underperformed compared to Noel’s earlier releases, the song initially passed by without much attention.
Then came the turning point.
The song suddenly exploded in popularity after Crown J performed it on the hit MBC reality show "We Got Married". Soon after, couples across Korea began requesting Noel at wedding ceremonies everywhere. The members later recalled that this single song helped them endure a long hiatus in their career. In fact, they became so associated with weddings that people jokingly nicknamed them “professional wedding singers.”
There’s also a fun story the members often share in interviews. They laugh about how they’ve sung “Propose” so many times that parts of it almost come out automatically now. Yet when member Jeon Woo-sung got married, all four members gathered together and sang the song sincerely for him, showing their strong friendship. It feels like a scene straight out of a movie.
The group also revealed a charming little secret: during wedding performances, they intentionally tone down the original song’s powerful high-note ad-libs because older guests can get too startled by how intense they are. Even in performance, Noel’s warmth and consideration shine through.
“I kept telling you to wait while turning away for so long
Believing that someday, if we waited a little longer, that moment would come.”
“You don’t have to cry
Please don’t cry, lift your head and smile now
I will make you smile
I’ll only give you happiness forever by your side.”
Perhaps what makes these lyrics feel so sincere is the mixture of love and apology within them. After days of uncertainty and hesitation, the narrator finally promises to wipe away tears and spend a lifetime bringing happiness to the one they love. You can almost feel the trembling emotion of a real proposal in these lines.
Musically, “Propose” is a sweet ballad built upon a gentle bossa nova rhythm. The song begins softly, almost like a shy confession, but gradually grows more emotional as the harmonies of all four members begin to stack together.
The explosive ad-libs in the final chorus are especially unforgettable, delivering an overwhelming emotional catharsis. The song is also famously difficult to sing because of its incredibly high notes. Even Noel themselves have joked that most people are better off lowering the key when attempting it at karaoke or weddings.

When it comes to songs about marriage proposals in Korea, “Propose” is almost always mentioned first.
More than just a popular ballad, the song became part of Korea’s wedding culture itself. Loved across generations for over two decades, “Propose” helped firmly establish Noel in the hearts of the public and remains one of the most iconic Korean wedding songs ever made.
