In East Asian folklore, there is a legend of the “Red Thread of Fate,” an invisible string that ties together the little fingers of those destined to meet. Most people imagine a romantic ending waiting at the other end of that thread. But in An Ye-eun (안예은)’s “Red Tie (홍연),” the destiny it portrays is far more cruel. The gentle hand that once caressed you transforms into the hand of a tyrant gripping a blade, delivering a tragic fate.
And yet, what is this feeling that keeps one from cutting that red thread? At its end lies not a sweet lover, but a sorrowful bond—one that stands weeping tears of blood.
❤The Story Behind
The story of this song’s birth and success feels like a drama in itself. “Red Tie (홍연)” was originally a self-composed piece that An Ye-eun performed during the first round of the finals on the audition program K-pop Star Season 5. Inspired by the film The King and the Clown, she told this tragic story from the perspective of King Yeonsangun—a ruler abandoned by the world.
However, her unconventional vocal style and unfamiliar musical approach were met with harsh criticism. The judges described it as “too intense,” and she was placed on the brink of elimination.
Then, something remarkable happened. Yoo Hee-yeol, a judge from Antenna Music, used his wildcard to save her, calling her “a singer unlike any other in Korea.” It was as if the red thread of fate, moments away from being severed, was tied together once again.
Later, as if by destiny, the song was selected as the main theme for the historical drama Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People. For An Ye-eun, who had long dreamed of singing for a historical drama OST, this was the fulfillment of a deeply held wish. A song that was nearly dismissed on an audition stage ultimately blossomed into a beloved hit, moving the hearts of listeners across the nation.
