Have you ever looked out the window and suddenly thought, “It’s already been a year”?

The song I’m introducing today is “Already One Year (벌써 일년)” by Brown Eyes—a track that, in the summer of 2001, shook all of South Korea without a single TV appearance, relying solely on its voices and music video. The familiar intro that would drift out whenever you opened a café door, and the line “It’s only because it’s your first time—you’ll be okay in a few days” became a kind of national comfort anthem for anyone going through a breakup at the time.

❤The Story Behind

Behind the creation of this song lies the quiet desperation of two musicians. Naul and Yoon Gun of Brown Eyes had each gone through the disappointment of not finding much success in their previous groups. Perhaps because of that, their goal for this album was surprisingly modest: “Let’s just sell 50,000 copies.”

What followed, however, was a massive success that exceeded their goal by fourteen times.

Interestingly, the song was inspired by the style of the Backstreet Boys, but carefully reshaped to fit Korean sentiment. Yoon Gun’s gift for accessible melodies combined with Naul’s deeply expressive R&B vocals resulted in what many would call a new genre—“Korean-style R&B.” At the time, their agency’s CEO even decided, “We’re selling 30,000 copies a day—let’s not put them on TV and just let it be.” Thanks to that decision, they remain etched in memory as something close to a mysterious legend.

📑 Lyric Highlight

“I believe in you, I believe in your mind
It’s already been a year, but even a year later, and the year after that, I’ll still be waiting for you.”

Even though a full year has passed since the breakup, the narrator’s heart hasn’t moved forward at all. The contrast between “believing” and the repeated promise of “waiting” emphasizes a love so unwavering that time itself cannot erode it—capturing the peak of a deeply devoted, almost painful sincerity.

🎧 Sound & Vibe

The song opens with acoustic guitar and piano, soon joined by gentle synth strings. And the moment Naul’s voice enters—it no longer feels like just a song; it feels like the air itself has changed. As the track builds, his voice climbs effortlessly beyond two octaves, eventually reaching a high C in the third octave. Yet it never feels strained—rather, it sounds as if the emotion is overflowing to its very limit.

It’s a seamless blend of the familiar warmth of Korean pop with the expressive depth of contemporary R&B. In fact, for many listeners, this was the song that first made them use the term “Korean-style R&B.”

Already One Year (벌써 일년)

It’s only because it’s your first time—you’ll feel better in a few days

Just holding onto that thought, a whole year has already passed

Every anniversary we once shared comes back to me with sorrow

The shy excitement when I first confessed my love

The day we first met quietly fades into the past

On your birthday, a cake filled with my tears

I light the candles and wish you well

I believe in you

I believe in your mind

Even though a year has already passed

A year from now, and even the year after, I’ll still be waiting for you

I miss you so much—please come back to me

But I couldn’t say those words

The warmth in his eyes as he looks at you

And the ring on your left hand

None of it shines more than your face

Even knowing you’ve started over

That you’re now making memories without me

The memories I hold onto are always

Our past laughter, conversations, and wishes

And there’s only one new memory I’ll ever make

It’s you, within my waiting and my tears

❤Cultural Impact & Moment
“Already One Year (벌써 일년)” left behind more than just its status as a hit song. After its release, the Korean music scene saw a surge of mid-tempo tracks layered with R&B-style vocals, with artists like SG Wannabe and Fly to the Sky carrying the torch forward. Its melodic strength even crossed borders, inspiring adapted versions in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

In Korea, there’s a phrase: “Kim, Na, Park, Lee”—referring to four of the greatest vocalists, identified by their surnames. The “Na” in that list is none other than Naul, one of the voices behind this very song. And the starting point of that legendary reputation traces back to “Already One Year (벌써 일년).”
