Have you ever looked out the window and suddenly thought, “It’s already been a year”?
The song I’m introducing today is “Already One Year (벌써 일년)” by Brown Eyes—a track that, in the summer of 2001, shook all of South Korea without a single TV appearance, relying solely on its voices and music video. The familiar intro that would drift out whenever you opened a café door, and the line “It’s only because it’s your first time—you’ll be okay in a few days” became a kind of national comfort anthem for anyone going through a breakup at the time.
What followed, however, was a massive success that exceeded their goal by fourteen times.
Interestingly, the song was inspired by the style of the Backstreet Boys, but carefully reshaped to fit Korean sentiment. Yoon Gun’s gift for accessible melodies combined with Naul’s deeply expressive R&B vocals resulted in what many would call a new genre—“Korean-style R&B.” At the time, their agency’s CEO even decided, “We’re selling 30,000 copies a day—let’s not put them on TV and just let it be.” Thanks to that decision, they remain etched in memory as something close to a mysterious legend.
Even though a full year has passed since the breakup, the narrator’s heart hasn’t moved forward at all. The contrast between “believing” and the repeated promise of “waiting” emphasizes a love so unwavering that time itself cannot erode it—capturing the peak of a deeply devoted, almost painful sincerity.
It’s a seamless blend of the familiar warmth of Korean pop with the expressive depth of contemporary R&B. In fact, for many listeners, this was the song that first made them use the term “Korean-style R&B.”

❤Cultural Impact & Moment
“Already One Year (벌써 일년)” left behind more than just its status as a hit song. After its release, the Korean music scene saw a surge of mid-tempo tracks layered with R&B-style vocals, with artists like SG Wannabe and Fly to the Sky carrying the torch forward. Its melodic strength even crossed borders, inspiring adapted versions in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
In Korea, there’s a phrase: “Kim, Na, Park, Lee”—referring to four of the greatest vocalists, identified by their surnames. The “Na” in that list is none other than Naul, one of the voices behind this very song. And the starting point of that legendary reputation traces back to “Already One Year (벌써 일년).”
